Reality Check

Literacy is a basic right that is essential for human development and well-being.

It is the ability to read, write, speak, and listen, so that we can communicate effectively and understand the world around us.

Brief History:

Destination: Iran

Year: 1965

A monumental event took place at the World Conference of Ministers of Education on the Eradication of Illiteracy to "remind the international community of the importance of literacy for individuals, communities and societies, and the need for intensified efforts towards more literate societies.”

1966: September 8 is declared International Literacy Day by UNESCO.

Each year a conference is held in a different country as a continuous effort in eradicating illiteracy. The meeting is given a theme and various ways to celebrate individually and collectively.

2023 Host Country: France

Theme: Promoting literacy for a world in transition: Building the foundation for sustainable and peaceful societies.

Those who can read, write, and comprehend, take the concept of literacy for granted. Sadly, there are over 700 million adults worldwide, who are unable to read.

How can you help someone with illiteracy?

1. Raise awareness

2. Sponsor education

3. Donate books

4. Volunteer at your local library/a literacy program

5. Contribute to bookmobiles

6. Tutor

7. Become a teacher

We must all work together to eradicate this global atrocity...
